The Latest News from Wheatsville

Message from the Board President - Rose Marie Klee

It is an interesting time to be reflecting on the 45th Anniversary of the Wheatsville Co-op. It begs reflection on our founders and the passion they brought to creating our organization. I have had the great pleasure of meeting several people who played direct parts in our origin story. They were passionate about the potential for Wheatsville to provide an inclusive place where a community could come together, a source of delicious food, all delivered though sustainable economic practices: fair prices to producers, fair wages to staff, and fair prices to consumers, along with mindfulness about environmental ethics. This is captured in the preface to our bylaws:

“The purpose of Wheatsville Co-op is to create a self-reliant, self-empowering community of people that will grow and promote the transformation of society toward cooperation, justice, and non-exploitation. The mission of Wheatsville Co-op is to serve a broad range of people by providing them goods and services, using efficient methods that avoid manipulation of the consumers and minimize exploitation of the producers or damage to the environment. The primary focus for this mission is supplying high-quality food and non-doctrinaire information about food to people in Austin, Texas.”

Our four and a half decades of history include our share of high points and challenges, and often they are inter-twined. Those times when it seems hardest also demonstrate our passion and commitment; they have been opportunities for us to find each other, to lead, to support, and to remember that the mark of our caliber as humans is all about how we show up to support each other and how we bring out the best in each other and ourselves.

It has never been easy, but our work has been made easier by the joy we find in coming together in cooperation because we know that there are things we can do together that we cannot do alone. Wheatsville is our gift to ourselves and our world; a place where we seek to grow and cultivate the best that is within ourselves and others because we know that that is how we make a better world.

Thank you all for bring the best part of Wheatsville and your constant commitment to making us better each and every day!

Guadalupe gets a new Mural

This September artist J Muzacz finished a mural adorning the northwest corner of our Guadalupe location. The new mural featuring real-life cocoa farmers was created in partnership with Fair Trade America to bring awareness to millions of farmers worldwide that face poverty. Wheatsville was chosen along with two other coops in a nationwide campaign. Fairtrade America chose Wheatsville because of our continued dedication to promoting Fairtrade products in the Austin area.

The featured farmers were consulted and are proud to be included in the mural artwork. Our mural celebrates three female farmers and cooperative leaders who grow cocoa used in Fairtrade certified goods, including Tony’s Chocolonely bars. The three women are Sara, Eugenie and Assata. Sarah Larweh is a cocoa farmer and board member of her cooperative in Ghana where she works to address and resolve instances of child labor. A cocoa farmer in the Ivory Coast, Eugenie Lago leads a women’s association that helps members diversify their crops to increase profits and alleviate poverty within the community.  Lastly, Assata Doumbia, cocoa farmer and president of her cocoa cooperative, has led her cooperative to become one of the top 3 in the Ivory Coast.

Tony’s Chocolonely is a Fairtrade-certified chocolate company committed to ending modern slavery and illegal child labor in the chocolate industry through paying higher prices to cocoa farmers, trading directly with cocoa farmers to ensure traceability, and investing in the stability and well-being of cocoa cooperatives.

Celebrate Fairtrade month with us by stopping by and taking a photo if front of Sara, Eugenie and Assata this October with the hashtag #choosefairtrade

Candidate Forum

Nominations Committee proudly presents three Board of Director Candidates, each who fulfilled all requirements of the Board Candidate qualification process.

How do Board Candidates get on the ballot?
Candidacy is obtainable in two ways. The first is by way of Wheatsville’s Board Qualification process, which includes:
• Be an owner in good standing
• Submit a complete application by the August 13th deadline
• Attend a candidate orientation session
• Attend a Board Meeting in the current year prior to the start of the annual election
• Provide a resume and two references
• Agree to abide by the Board of Directors’ Code of Conduct, and
• Provide a personal statement

The second way an owner makes the ballot is by submitting a petition signed by 100 or 1% (which-ever is greater) of the owners in good standing as described in section 5.2 of the Wheatsville Bylaws. No candidates opted to pursue this avenue to make the ballot this year.

Community Action Nominees

18 community non-profit organizations made the ballot. The ten non-profits receiving the most votes will be assigned a fundraising month in 2022. One month is reserved for the Wheatsville Cooperative Community Fund and one month for Let’s Feed Austin.

Additionally, Financial information was provided by each of our non-profit nominees to support efforts to make intentional decisions about the relative size of each organization and made available online on the election homepage.

Co-op Community Fund

During the celebration of Co-op Month this October, Wheatsville has a great way to support co-op development and charities and groups working here in Austin at the same time, simply round up at the registers for the Co-op Community Fund!

The Co-op Community Fund is an investment fund sponsored by the Twin Pines Cooperative Foundation. The Co-op Community Fund serves as a means for co-op shoppers to make donations to an endowment that donates to local organizations. The endowment fund principal is used to make loans available to cooperatives that are founding, expanding or renovating. As the loans are paid back, the interest is made available to Wheatsville to donate to local groups working on issues relating to sustainable agriculture and organic food, hunger and social issues, environmental protection and cooperatives.

Wheatsville has used the interest from the Co-op Community Fund to donate in a number of ways. Since 2010, Wheatsville has used the funds to match staff members charitable donations. Additionally, Wheatsville has donated from the fund to groups Black-led groups in Austin in observation of Juneteenth with $3000 in 2020 and $5000 in 2021. Because Wheatsville shoppers have been so generous to the Co-op Community Fund, there were enough funds for Wheatsville to make a one time-donation to ACBA (Austin Cooperative Business Alliance) of $5000.

As cooperators, we look for ways to work in solidarity with each other and multiply the effects of the good work we do. Rounding up at Wheatsville this October benefits coops on a national scale and groups doing good work right here in our community.

If you read the last Breeze, then you probably saw a whole write up on what a wonderful company Alter Eco is. That knowledge only helps encourage my once per grocery trip treat. They’re so delicious! I don’t know what it is about this tea, but it puts me in the best mood. I love the floral notes from the rose petals.

Malk – Almond Milk

I’m here for the Malk! There are few alternative milks that you want to drink alone without cereal or coffee, but the Almond Malk is a big exception.

Fall Vegetables

As summer ends, bring on all those beautiful, comforting fall vegetables. From September through November, the fall season brings many delicious fruits and vegetables that pack a ton of health benefits and warm the soul. This season offers a variety of produce from squash, sweet potatoes, apples, pumpkins, and more. Many of the vegetables harvested at this time are hearty root vegetables, meant to help tide us over until the spring harvest.

To keep up with the increase in demand, most grocery stores must often resort to trucking produce from different parts of the world. If, however, you make the choice to focus on consuming local fruits and vegetables instead of produce with a long transport time, you help to both reduce your carbon footprint and support your local community.

Wheatsville looks to not only bring in as many organic produce items as possible, but also tries to focus on supporting local farmers, as well. This year, we are particularly excited about partnering with Pecos Farms a well-known Texas Farm to bring in pumpkins.

We always are grateful to the community and Wheatsville Owners for their support.
