Wheatsville's been a vital part of Central Texas for over 35 years.

In 1975, a ZZ Top concert was held as a benefit for the UT Student Association. After the concert, a few co-opers appealed to the student government senate and secured some of the concert proceeds for the Austin Co-op Project. ACP made about $5,000 available for Wheatsville's start-up, and other funds came from College Houses and Frank Cook. Wheatsville co-opers rented the basement at 29th and Lamar, bought as much equipment as they could afford, and stocked the shelves. On March 16, 1976, Wheatsville opened its doors. Back then, we were run by "turnups," co-opers who "turned up" to work. They built and stocked the shelves, unloaded the trucks, did construction work, and cleaned the floors.

Since then, Wheatsville has grown into the most successful food co-op in Texas. We have nearly $14 million in annual sales, and over 10000 members. And still we remember our roots. Wheatsville is dedicated to the principles of cooperation, and remains committed to our founding ideals of community control, social action, and environmental responsibility.

Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance

Independent farmers and ranchers need a voice. For too long, our elected officials have listened to the huge industrial-agriculture companies, and made the laws and regulations to benefit them. Independent farmers and ranchers were forgotten or, worse, targeted for ever-more burdensome regulations.

The Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance (FARFA) is dedicated to representing non-corporate agriculture and animal owners, from homesteaders to horse owners to full-time ranchers. FARFA work also serves those who are local foods consumers, people who care about protecting our traditional way of life, and other like-minded individuals.

FARFA advocates for farmers, ranchers, and homesteaders through public education and lobbying to assure their independence in the production and marketing of their food, and to prevent the imposition of unnecessary regulatory burdens that are not in the public interest. FARFA also advocates for consumers access to information and resources to obtain healthy foods of their choice.
